Overview

Manhattan Isles Network is a small, company composed entirely of volunteers. We got started in a very small way in the Summer of 1997, with a desire to create an alternative to the Internet for the Harlem Community. We had the foresight to purchase the manhattanisles.net domain, even though we were not ready to put any services into production.

The Past

We began building our system as quickly as possible, so that we could capitalize on the flood of users purchasing computer in the Harlem Community. At the beginning, we planned a large range of services, certainly more than we could handle. We narrowed our focus to local access, email, chat rooms and news for our first attempt.

The Present

We recently upgraded our entire network to provide a more customized and organized interface to our services, allowing us to add new features and services more easily, and allowing our users to control their accounts from one central location. We are very pleased with the results of this upgrade. We have had some growing pains, but we are moving past them, onwards towards the future. We feel that the new features we have added to Manhattan Isles Network set us above many other services, and certainly above some of the pay services that charge for exactly what we provide.

The Future

Now that the new system is in place, we plan to expand into other areas, including web and domain hosting services. Keep your eyes on the What's New Page for information about current developments.

The People

As stated before, we are a small group of volunteers. All funding for our services comes from that (annoying) banner advertising on the pages of the site, and from the generosity of our users through donations. We are always looking for suggestions to improve our services, and we are open to your suggestions. Thanks for your continuing support!

Our Hardware/Software

Our main server for Manhattan Isles Network is a 300MHz AMD K6-2 3D with 128MB of system RAM and 12.1GB of storage. We are running Windows 2000, which was chosen for ease of installation and maintenance, coupled with repeatedly tested high performance under heavy loads. We run Wildcat Interactive Net Server for our web serving needs and Dynamic DNS for DNS purposes.

Our Connectivity

We are currently purchasing services from Bell Atlantic. We rely on your donations to be able to provide this service free to the Harlem Community. We feel that we are much better able to serve you.

Thanks for your continuing support on our journey!
